ALCOHOLS

Compounds of the type R-OH, where R is a hydrocarbon radical. The alcohols can be measured by their C-H stretch bands near 3000 cm-1 and by their C-O bands near 1000 cm-1. They also show O-H stretch bands near 3600 cm-1, but these bands are weak and frequently obscured by water. Components of alcohol mixtures can be measured individually by means of the detailed structure in the C-O stretch region near 1000 cm-1. See SPECTRA, chapter J.
